How Alike are Keyed Alike? by NU-SET

Keyed Alike Single Cylinder DeadboltBy definition, a series of keyed alike (KA) locks are locks that can be operated by the same key. As long as the cylinders and keys are made uniformly, the same key can operate any kind of cylinder lock (deadbolt, doorlock, padlock, etc.) with the same keycode. So why is it that some folks can’t open a keycoded 35241 deadbolt with a 35241 key?

No detective work was needed to uncover the mystery but our China and U.S. staff investigated the matter by doing some shopping nationally. We bought a number of popular KA locks (eg. 35241) priced from $4.59 to $11.50 per piece and that were sold in different locations. Our purchase was a collection of 35241 cylinders that came in all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately for most consumers, the disparities are minute. Only an experienced locksmith might have detected the slight differences in thickness and notches of the keys, and no shopper would have seen the irregular pins within the cylinder that lay so well hidden away.

To continuously reproduce cylinders and keys with identical measurement requires careful monitoring at the production line and passing stringent quality control inspections. Obviously, some manufacturers are producing popular KA series liberally to cut cost. In such cases, the only "likeness" you will find are those locks made from one single batch.

At NUSET, we guarantee the quality of our locks, especially the uniformity between our KA series and other standardized products in the market. But we can't guarantee products by manufacturers who do not follow standards. Since there is no easy way to distinguish a genuine KA lock from its defective cousins, we urge you to rely on trustworthy brands to ensure that you enjoy all the benefits of your purchase.
